IRS Code 570 Explained: What It Means and What Happens Next

If you see IRS Transaction Code 570 on your tax transcript, you may be wondering whether something is wrong with your return or whether your refund has been delayed.
In plain English, IRS Code 570 means “Additional Account Action Pending.” It generally indicates that the IRS has placed a temporary hold on certain activity on your tax account while additional processing or review takes place.
What Does IRS Code 570 Mean?
Code 570 tells the IRS system that additional action is needed before the account can continue processing normally.
The Taxpayer Advocate Service explains that a Code 570 can be used to place a hold on an account while the IRS determines whether an adjustment or other action is necessary. During that time, an overpayment that might otherwise become a refund can remain on hold.
That means Code 570 does not automatically mean you are being audited, that you owe additional taxes, or that your refund has been denied.
It means your account needs additional processing before the IRS completes the next step.
Does Code 570 Delay Your Refund?
It can.
If you are expecting a refund, Code 570 may temporarily prevent the IRS from releasing that refund while the account action is pending.
How long the hold lasts depends on why the code was added to your account. There is no single timeline that applies to every taxpayer.
You may also see other transaction codes or notices appear on your transcript as the IRS continues processing your account.
Why Did Code 570 Appear on My Transcript?
There can be several reasons the IRS needs additional time to process an account.
For example, the IRS may need to review information connected with your tax return, credits, payments, adjustments, or another account transaction.
The important thing to remember is that Code 570 by itself does not tell you the exact reason for the review.
Look at the other transaction codes, dates, and notices appearing around Code 570 on your transcript for additional context.
What Should I Do If I Have Code 570?
First, check whether the IRS has sent you a notice or letter.
You can also continue checking your IRS Account Transcript for additional transaction codes or updates.
The IRS allows taxpayers to view, print, and download their transcripts through an Individual Online Account. A Tax Account Transcript includes account information and changes made after a return was filed.
If the IRS sends you a notice requesting information or documentation, follow the instructions and deadline provided in that notice.
If no notice has been issued, Code 570 may simply remain on the transcript while the IRS completes its processing.
Is IRS Code 570 Bad?
Not necessarily.
Seeing Code 570 can be frustrating—especially when you're waiting for a refund—but the code itself does not determine the final outcome of your return.
Think of it as a temporary processing hold rather than a final decision.
What happens next depends on the reason the IRS placed the hold and any additional activity that appears on your account.
